The place

   The restaurant  G A D E S  is an impressive establishment.

   The arcades and vaults date from the 14th century. At that time the sea used to reach where   G A D E S  is now, and the fishermen were able to leave their boats outside.

 
 

 
   In Barcelona, the XVI to the XVIII centuries were the times of the unions ("de los Gremios") and the building was employed as a place to dry esparto; the hoops that were used to hang the esparto can still be seen.
 

 
  

   Later it was used as a store by fue nearby market of Born. Many years later it was converted to become El Zócalo, a muched loved comer in the seventies. Together with Zeleste, it was one of the first bars to serve drinks from glasses.

   Then, in 1986, when Elena, Nuria and Carmen took over the business, they obtained a good number of staunch customers and the neighbourhood has become a much sort after zone.

   Nowadays, there is increasing cultural and artistic movement in Born as well as being an area with an active night life.
